A short list of collector's items that may not be in bloom, but are available to the discerning enthusiast; all are blooming size, most have bloomed already, not all seen by me or us.
Last updated 3 September 2011 - come back soon, as various things go out of bloom all the time or are acquired as extras, and as new photos go up linked to this and our other pages.
A note on the photographs: all are copyright Carson Barnes, usable by permission; high quality photo prints are available of many seen here, and many more not seen. Prices for archival prints start at $50.00. Inquire.
Paph. Lady Isabel - big blooming size (over two feet across) in 6" $60
Paph. Marilyn Hanson (stonei x delenatii) big plants in 6" pots $50
Vanda spathulata - fragrant 1" yellow blooms on tall viny plants, not common in cultivation, from Sri Lanka and southern India; grows well and blooms at least twice a year here. $150.
Paphiopedilum Quasar (Macabre x rothschildianum) - dark spotted multiflorals, 6" $55
Miltoniopsis Vanity 'Red Shadow' AM/AOS - still one of the reddest Pansy orchids. 4" pots that have bloomed once already, $35.
Paphiopedilum (kolopakingii x Pinocchio) - 5 or 6 flowers per stem, 5" pots $50. How about a closeup?
Cattleya x floribunda (maxima x labiata) - the natural hybrid, described in the Gardener's Chronicle in 1895 (which is now viewable on Google) - fragrant, an old curiosity. $35.
Plectelminthus caudatus - west African species, night fragrant, green with ivory lip and some reddish at center; gorgeous and rather rare. $60, to bloom in coming season.
Vanda Chill Out ([tessellata x denisoniana] x javierae) - 4" blooming size $55 - blooms repeatedly all year, and fragrant; we made this one
Paphiopedilum charlesworthii - we make divisions of our selected, unshown plants from time to time; $45.
Ansellia africana - robust plants in 5", have bloomed, typical green with brown polka dots, yellow lip, honey fragrance; rather large to ship even out of bloom. $50.
Cymbidiella pardalina syn. rhodocheila - near blooming size 5" pots, just one or two. $65.
Paphiopedilum tonsum 'var. curtisiifolium' - not a botanical variety, coppery flowers with red under the leaves; Liem Khe Wie exported these in the 1980s and we got one. Divisions available occasionally; $45.
Paphiopedilum sukhakulii some nice ones, $30
Phragmipediums - long tailed ones - Kew now calls this warscewiczii, though their "monocot checklist" says that is not a valid name. For years, we've called it caudatum from Guatemala. We have some small divisions, they bloom in 4" pots, usually 1 or 2 flowers, tails around 20 inches long, $45 - 65. We also have some "wallisii" whose name is constantly changing, similar but pale colors, and from Colombia, divisions available from time to time, $75 - 90; ew are of course aware that other growers sell this for as much as $150 but we think it unfair.
Trichoglottis brachiata - eventually a tall vining Vanda relative, quite spicy fragrance, one flower per leaf axil; a few young but bloomed plants $40.
Paph. hirsutissimum - divisions of our selected one - $65
Paph. hirsutissimum var. esquirolei - darker stem, less hairy; we may have an extra one or two - $65
Paph. rothschildianum ('Charles E.' x 'Borneo') $100
Paph Woluwense (niveum x rothschildianum) $45
Similar, but longer more narrow petals: Paph (bellatulum x St. Swithin), clumps $45
A number of handsome Vanda hybrids in 6" pots, $25
Laelia
purpurata - a curious color variant, white with very pale pinkish lip; pointy
petals. Blooms a bit later than most purpuratas, typically June. $50
Brassia longissima = arcuigera 'Cherry Vale'
or 'Pumpkin Patch' $35
Zygopetalum maculatum - this is the species that includes both "mackayi" and "intermedium"; tall stems, 4 or more fragrant green/brown spotted flowers with violet streaked fuzzy lip. A few big honking plants, $40.
Tolumnia Rainbow - still have some - $20
Vanda Tokyo Blue x coerulea, still
have a few in 5" blooming size, a bunch bloomed but their season is spring
mostly, $35.
Lc. Blue Angel 'Glove' - we have a few cloned
plants repotted October 2010 to 6"; expect 3 to 4 blooms per lead, 4"
blooms, September/October 2011. $35.
Angraecum didieri mini $20
Paph. gratrixianum $35 this is one of the parents,
both are awarded; also a few plants of the cross of one of our awarded gratrixianums
with Paph. Magic Glen, in bud October 2010, none yet seen; these @ $28.
Mexicoa ghiesbreghtiana mounted on cork $15
Bromeliads are ready from time to time; mostly speckly (and prickly!) Billbergias, tiny to large Tillandsias and a few others; inquire as to pricing.
